David Zwirner’s Hong Kong gallery to launch with new works by Michaël Borremans

David Zwirner’s Hong Kong gallery will launch in early 2018 with an exhibition of new works by the Belgian artist Michaël Borremans. Details of the show are still under wraps, but it is understood the paintings are a continuation of Borremans’ acclaimed Black Mould series–works depicting hooded figures that were first shown in London in 2015.

“Borremans is a bit of a super star in Asia,” says Angela Choon, a senior partner at David Zwirner. “Collectors in the region love the quality of his painting, the way he mixes different textures.”

Zwirner joins Pace gallery in a new commercial hub in the city’s Central district. The complex, known as H Queen’s, will rival Hong Kong’s other main gallery cluster in the nearby Pedder Building, which hosts Gagosian, Lehmann Maupin, and Simon Lee, among others.

The new gallery is due to open before Chinese New Year next February and in time for Zwirner’s 25th anniversary celebrations. The New York dealer is offering to fly all of his artists to Hong Kong for the launch.
