Since Art Basel launched its new fair, Paris+ par Art Basel (19-23 October)—seizing the spot at the Grand Palais from Foire internationale d'art contemporain (Fiac)—eyes have been peeled for the announcement of which galleries have made the cut for the inaugural event.
The wait is now over, with Art Basel revealing the 156 galleries that will take part. This list was whittled down from a pool of applicants that fair director Clément Delépine says was "four to five times the amount".
The bulk of these will be unsurprising to regular Basel fairgoers with major blue-chip dealers such as David Zwirner, Victoria Miro and Gagosian all taking part. They join 60 Paris galleries such as Galerie Jocelyn Wolff and Mor Charpentier to give the show a "singularly Parisian personality" according to Art Basel global director Marc Spiegler. Smaller spaces such as ProjecteSD (Barcelona) and Société (Berlin) have also come on board (the full exhibitor list can be found at the bottom of this article).
Among the 18 exhibitors making their Art Basel debuts are the Paris galleries Galerie Anne Barrault, Christian Berst Art Brut, Magnin-A, Salle Principale and We Do Not Work Alone.
But perhaps more interesting to note are which galleries have taken part in previous editions of Fiac but are not included in the inaugural Paris+. Analysing the Fiac exhibitor lists of both 2021 and 2019 (last year's edition of Fiac contained several Covid-19 restrictions with a number of galleries choosing to show digitally) reveals 73 galleries that fit this criteria. Art Basel declines to name its applicants, so it is difficult to say which galleries simply chose not to apply rather than were rejected.
A full list of these galleries can be found at the bottom of the article, but they include Blum & Poe (New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo), Baronian Xippas (Brussels), Dastan Gallery (Tehran), PKM (Seoul) and The Breeder (Athens). Sixteen Parisian galleries that showed in either of the last two editions of Fiac will not show at Paris+. They are: Imane Farès, Laurent Godin, Gaudel de Stampa, Galerie 8 + 4, Gilles Drouault, Galerie Hopkins, Galerie Mitterrand, Eric Philippe, Pact, Praz-Delavallade, Natalie Seroussi, Sèvres, Galerie Patrick Seguin, Galerie Sator, Joseph Tang and Anne de Villepoix.
However, for galleries that didn't make the cut this year, their luck might change once the fair moves from its temporary home at the Grand Palais Éphémère to the Grand Palais in 2024, once the latter has been restored. When it does so, the fair's capacity will increase by 50% says Delépine, adding that currently Art Basel has maximised every inch of floor space to accommodate as many galleries as possible.
Since the inception of Paris+, Art Basel has made clear that the event will be more than just a fair, and that partnering with cultural institutions in Paris will be key to the event's structure. Keeping true to the promise, Art Basel has joined forces with the Musée du Louvre to launch an initiative in Paris called Sites—broadly similar to Parcours in Basel—for which a number of galleries have been invited to stage outdoor sculptures and installations around the Tuileries Gardens. The Place Vendôme, Musée national Eugène-Delacroix and Chapelle des Petits-Augustins des Beaux-Arts de Paris will also host works. Importantly, Delépine says applications are open to all galleries, regardless of whether they were accepted to the main fair.
Earlier this year, Marc Spiegler told The Art Newspaper of his wish for Paris+ to act as a means of citywide activation and to partner with major fashion, design and cinema brands. Delépine says that these plans are still in the works but might not come to fruition for the inaugural edition of Paris+, which, he hastens to add, will have come together in just nine months.
Speaking to the future of both Paris+ and art fairs in general, Delépine says: "If you think of what we did for Basel—the whole city [has been] transformed into a biodome for art. Imagine what this could do in the context of a city like Paris. There is a will for Art Basel to expand beyond the walls of an art fair.”
