For 30 years, The Art Newspaper has been the art world’s journal of record. Much of our reporting looks at the business of art and heritage, the people behind the scenes, the events that occur around the production and distribution of art around the world, rather than the art itself. But interviews with artists have always been at the heart of what we do.

Over three decades we have followed the shifts of contemporary art through these exclusive, in-depth conversations. As we prepare for our anniversary in October, we have delved into our archive to bring you some of the highlights. Of course, these interviews evoke the vastly changed contexts around art in that time, but they also reveal that much remains the same: their materials and language may change, but artists still seek to distill often complex ideas into meaningful, distinctive experiences, to find a way to communicate with us on a profound level.

• For more interviews, make sure to listen to our new podcast A brush with..., which features exclusive conversations with leading artists. The series begins with the painter Michael Armitage on 5 August
