Divas never go out of fashion, hence the current fascination with possibly the greatest grande dame of them all: Maria Callas, the Greek opera singer who died 40 years ago. Maria by Callas, which opened last month at the new La Seine Musicale concert venue in Boulogne-Billancourt in western Paris (until 14 December), really is a treat for those mad about Maria; there are more than 5,000 photographs on show, as well as films capturing the legendary soprano frolicking on Aristotle Onassis’s yacht, shot by none other than Grace Kelly and Franco Zeffirelli. Meanwhile, being known as temperamental did not bother Callas, it seems. “I will always be as difficult as necessary to achieve the best,” she once said.
