Brooklyn embraces a hometown hero

Brooklyn’s Prospect Park will soon have a sculpture of another American icon to join the likes of Abraham Lincoln and Washington Irving: Steve Rogers, alias Captain America, a borough native who is celebrating his 75th anniversary this year. The Brooklyn-based action figure designer and artist Dave Cortes has teamed up with Marvel Comics to commemorate the milestone with a 13-foot bronze statue, due to be dedicated in Prospect Park’s Children’s Corner on 10 August. After a two-week stint in the park, the hometown hero’s one-tonne bronzed likeness will travel the borough, stopping at Barclay’s Centre in September and the Sunset Park neighbourhood from October through December. Fans awaiting the captain’s homecoming can track the statue’s trek across the United States from California, where it debuted at San Diego Comic-Con in July, on Marvel’s official fashion Instagram.
