Mapping the Metropolis

Queens Museum launches Kickstarter for new commissions and public programmes based on new atlas series Nonstop Metropolis

The Queens Museum—home of the Panorama of the City of New York, a room-sized scale model of the city—has launched a Kickstarter campaign to support a series of public programmes and newly commissioned works based on a new map of the city. The project was organised to coincide with the release of the forthcoming publication of Nonstop Metropolis: A New York City Atlas by Rebecca Solnit and Joshua Jelly-Schapiro, the third in a series of creative city guides that comprise essays and full-colour maps illustrated with drawings, paintings and photographs.

Highlights from the New York City edition include a rendering of Wu-Tang Clan’s Staten Island, and a re-imagining of the New York City subway system. According to the campaign, the overall project is “a celebration of New York City and the many stories that make it one of the most unique cities in the world”. As well as large-scale installations at the museum by the contemporary artists Duke Riley and Mariam Ghani, the museum plans to host monthly events featuring a writer or contributor from the book starting in June.

The museum needs to raise a little over $2,000 by 1 April to support the project. The lowest pledge of $10 will get you custom temporary tattoos designed by Riley. Anyone pledging $10,000 can become the creative director of their very own map of New York, which will be created by the team of cartographers, artists and authors behind the atlas series.
