A court in Rome has ruled that Christian Parisot is the rightful owner of the Modigliani Archives Légales, which contains 6,000 archival documents. The court rejected a claim by Laure Nechtschein-Modigliani, the granddaughter of the artist Amedeo Modigliani (died 1920), to the Rome-based archives. The court papers state that Parisot can also retain three stamps that may be used to “authenticate reproductions”. The documents and the stamps were legally entrusted to Parisot by Nechtschein-Modigliani’s mother, Jeanne Modigliani, in 1982. Significantly, Nechtschein-Modigliani owns the “moral rights” over the artist’s work. Meanwhile, the next hearing in a criminal case centering on the alleged counterfeiting of numerous Modigliani works by Parisot is due to take place in June.
