Oman is helping London’s Tate to build Tate Modern 2, an extension designed by Herzog and de Meuron, which are also building the new Miami Museum of Modern Art. The Tate’s director Nicholas Serota would not reveal the exact amount of the Sultanate of Oman’s gift, which he told Bloomberg was a “modest contribution of a few million”. Every little helps as the Tate still needs to raise half of the new wing’s £215m cost. It is much nearer raising the final £16m required to renovate Tate Britain, however. Work is due to start on the latter, a £45m, two-year project, in February.
