This show of works by eight Chinese artists is designed, says UCCA director Jérôme Sans, to answer a question he is regularly asked by curators, journalists, collectors and others: “Who are the leading Chinese artists of this generation?” The artists who provide the answer—Cao Fei, Chu Yun, Liu Wei, Qiu Zhijie, Sun Yuan & Peng Yu, Xu Zhen, Yang Fudong and Zheng Guogu—are all aged 40 or under, and, said Sans, “ready to jump into the international arena”. Sans, who curates the show with UCCA’s Guo Xiaoyan, sees this as a pivotal movement for the artists and Chinese art in a wider sense. “We are just before the big explosion for all of these artists,” he said. “We want to provide information for those who are interested in following what’s going on [in China] and understanding who are the truly interesting artists. We hope to show the real China, the real contemporary art, the serious artists.” James Hobbs
