The Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the world’s finest museums, is seeking a specialist in early and medieval Islamic art to fill the position of Assistant or Associate Curator in the Department of Islamic Art.
Primary Responsibilities and Specific Duties:
The Assistant/Associate Curator supports the head of the department. General duties include active participation in the management, care of, and research on the collection, as well as participation in all the activities of the Department, specifically exhibitions, publications, collection management, and planning for the new Islamic Art galleries.
The Assistant/Associate Curator will be involved in the organization of permanent gallery exhibits and long-term loans including research, label writing, and database maintenance. Participation in departmental projects of general and scholarly publications is also expected while also answering correspondence related to the collection and assisting the public and visiting scholars. The Assistant/Associate Curator will contribute to public programs organized by the museum, and interact with potential sponsors. Involvement in planning programs for the Friends group and the Visiting Committee will also be essential. Familiarity with conservation methods and procedures is a prerequisite for this position. The Assistant/Associate Curator should be prepared to foster and maintain good working relationships with colleagues from other institutions in the U.S. and abroad, with the scholarly community, dealers, collectors, and other individuals involved with the interests of the museum.
Requirements and Experience:
Successful candidates must possess demonstrated experience in accomplishing original research in the field of early and medieval Islamic art. Candidates should also have good working knowledge of Arabic, Persian, French, and German as well as possessing general familiarity with calligraphy, metalwork, ceramics, and other objects of Islamic art and architecture in the larger field of Islamic Art. A Ph.D. in art history of Islamic Art is required for this position.
