Surprise appointment at Budapest’s Mucsarnok
Gábor Gulyás, who was previously the director of the Centre for Modern and Contemporary Arts (MODEM) in Debrecen in Hungary, has been appointed director of Budapest’s prestigious Mucsarnok exhibition centre. The appointment came as a surprise, since Gulyás had not been involved in the original selection process, which began in August 2010.
The decision, which was announced by MNV, the Hungarian State Holding Company that legally owns Mucsarnok, is said to have been personally backed by the state secretary for culture, Géza Szocs.
During the six-month selection process, Mucsarnok’s existing director, Zsolt Petranyi, and contemporary art collector, Francesca von Habsburg, had emerged as the front runners for the five-year directorship.
While Gulyás had not previously been mentioned in relation to the role, figures in the local art scene had long suspected that Hungary’s newly elected government would seek to make its mark on the leadership of Mucsarnok. Gulyás has yet to set out his plans for the institution, but has said that he his happy to work with all the existing staff.
