Proposed Swiss law could be a major drag for Art Basel

Anti-tobacco law may affect sponsorship deal

One of Art Basel’s biggest sponsorship deals may go up in smoke. The Swiss tobacco giant Oettinger Davidoff, an “associate partner” of the art fair since 2012, could see its support of the event curtailed if a draft anti-tobacco bill is successful, according to the Basler Zeitung. Backed by the Swiss interior minister Alain Berset, the bill would prevent tobacco companies from sponsoring events with an international reach. The bill's consultation period ends in September.

As the piece of legislation has yet to pass, Art Basel will “not engage in speculations about the implications that such a law could potentially have,” according to a statement from fair organisers. The fair hopes that the Basel-based tobacco company will “continue to be a partner in the future”.
