The Art Fund has announced the six finalists for its annual prize to a UK museum for excellence and innovation. They range from Tate Britain and the Hayward Gallery in London to the small Ditchling Museum of Art and Craft, in an East Sussex village.
The winner of the £100,000 prize is due to be announced on 9 July. This year's judges includes Wim Pijbes, the director of the Rijksmuseum. Alongside the first international judge on the panel is the artist Michael Craig-Martin and Anna Somers Cocks, the founding editor and chief executive of The Art Newspaper.
The other institutions that they will be visiting are the Mary Rose Museum, Portsmouth, featuring the timbers and contents of Henry VIII's ill-fated flagship, the Sainsbury Centre for the Visual Arts, Norwich, which is housed in a landmark Norman Foster-designed building on the campus of the University of East Anglia (UEA), and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, near Wakefield in the north of England.
Open to museums of all sizes and genres across the UK, this year's shortlist features a higher than usual number of art galleries. Stephen Deuchar, the chair of the judges who is the director of the Art Fund, said in a statement that 2013 is a strong year with innovative curatorship "no longer the exception but the rule". He added: "No wonder that the international reputation of UK museums is riding so high".
Last year's award went to the William Morris Gallery in Walthamstow in east London, housed in the boyhood home of the influential Arts and Crafts designer and socialist firebrand.
