Louvre asks public to give €1m to conserve Nike
The project is the latest in the Paris museum’s Tous mécènes crowdfunding campaign

The Louvre has launched a crowdfunding initiative through its "Tous mécènes!" (All patrons) campaign to finance the conservation of the Winged Victory of Samothrace and its connecting Daru staircase by the end of this year. The Parisian museum aims to raise the final €1m of a €4m budget, with funding already received from Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Nippon Television, and F. Marc de Lacharrière (Fimalac).
This is not the first time the most visited museum in the world has reached out to the general public. In 2010, the Louvre raised €1.26m towards the acquisition of Lucas Cranach’s The Three Graces, 1531, with €1m of public donations received in a single month. Similar campaigns raised €500,000 in 2011 to restore and remount two architectural pieces from Cairo, and €800,000 raised in 2012 to buy a pair of 13th-century ivory statuettes considered to be French national treasures.
Winged Victory, around 190BC, was discovered in 1863 and arrived in Paris the next year. Other than regular dusting, it has not undergone any major conservation since 1883. With work starting this week, visitors will not be able to view the sculpture or walk through the staircase until June 2014.
